There is an exquisite valuable gemstone that you can add to your jeweler collection, especially if you have too much of the usual pearls, diamonds, rubies, and emeralds. This gemstone, called ammolite, is an organic gemstone and it is usually mined in the Rocky Mountains. These gems are made from fossilized shells and come in a combination of bright colors, usually red, green, and yellow. Ammolites are also known as korites, aapoaks, and calcenites.

Variations

There are two ways of classifying ammolites, by form and by grade. By form, there are two basic groups: doublets and triplets. An ammolite doublet features free form colors, which are usually in the shades of green, yellow, and orange. This type of ammolite features natural dichromatic shift and refractive properties, which basically means it changes colors when placed under fluorescent light and natural daylight.

On the other hand, an ammolite triplet is a brilliantly colored gemstone that consists of a natural optical quartz cap and a sturdy bottom layer of dark gray shale. This ammolite is more durable than the doublet and is the one that’s usually made into jewelry.

Meanwhile, there are four types of ammolite classifications by grade: AA, A+, A, and standard. An AA ammolite is a stone with at least three brilliant colors, an A+ has two to three bright colors, and an A ammolite has at least two light colors. Standard ammolite stones actually have no grades and they are the dullest variations.

Colorful ammolite stones are believed by Feng Shui masters and followers to have properties that can heal various psychological and emotional ailments. Feng Shui masters also usually recommend the use of ammolite stones to people who want to improve their spiritual health.
