Buying an engagement ring?
A few questions about diamond engagement rings:
1) Opinion – which is better a small (1/4 to 1/2 ct) high quality (VVS1 clarity and E/F color) or a larger (3/4 to 1 ct) lower quality (IS1 clarity and H/I color)?
2) Which of the 4 C’s has the most impact on price, Clarity, Color, Cut or Karat?
3) Buying a vintage or antique ring on Ebay or from estate sale, how to find a reputable seller?
Your answer will help me and my fiancee buy the best ring we can afford.
Go for quality over size! The quality determines how much fire/sparkle the diamond has, if you get a bigger diamond that has a poor cut and clarity, sure it will look bigger, but it will be a “dud” in terms of the fire that diamonds normally have.
If you are looking for sparkle the highest quality rated “C” should be cut. The quality of cut (not the shape) determines how much light is reflected and therefore how much fire and sparkle the ring will have.
Carat will have the most impact on the price, but it is the biggest waste of money as you increase the size (it goes up exponentially). Go smaller in the size and you can put half the savings into major increases in quality of the other C’s.
Size is also less important if your future fiance has smaller fingers. I have size 3.5 fingers, but when my fiance was designing my ring he thought my finger was a size 4. He had his heart/budget set on getting me a .7 carat diamond, but the jeweler that was making my ring told him to only get a .6 because on my tiny fingers .7 would look disproportionately large. I’ve tried on my older sisters 1.25 carat diamond engagement ring (her finger is a size 7 or 7.5) and it looks like costume jewelry on my small hands. My fiance saved a ton of money just by going down .1 carats and so he invested that in getting the best cut possible and getting a Canadian diamond to ensure it was conflict free.
I honestly get complements from complete strangers about how sparkly my engagement ring is! It catches nearly any light in a room and reflects across the room. The Excellent cut was worth the investment.
For colour a near-colourless (G,H, even I if you are having it set in yellow gold) will not be a noticeable difference from the D,E,F diamonds to the human eye. And if you invest in at least a VS2 or VS1 for the clarity it will be “eye clean” meaning that only a jeweler would actually be able to notice the inclusions, so the ring will still look beautiful.
I know it sounds weird but try http://bluenile.com/ for buying a loose diamond. They have a search where you can buy exactly the quality/size of diamond you want and their prices are close to wholesale. Yes they are an online store, but they are very reputable.
