Tension mount diamond engagement rings do tend to be more expensive than traditional engagement rings. One reason for this is because you buy a tension mount diamond engagement ring that is made out of white gold, yellow gold, or platinum, an expert jeweler will need to use a wider band-and therefore more metal-you’ll end up paying more. Gold and platinum is something you pay for based on the weight, so the more metal you need to use to create your ring, the more your ring will cost. Also, while you do not want to buy a diamond that is too small for a tension mount diamond engagement ring, you don’t have to buy a huge diamond, either. Try choosing a diamond between a one-half carat and 0.9 carats. You’ll be amazed how much less expensive a diamond that is just under a carat is compared to a diamond that is a true full carat. Even better, most people cannot tell the difference between a ring that is 0.9 carats and one that is actually a full carat. By getting a slightly smaller diamond-but still one that is large enough to not disappear within the tension mount setting-you can save hundreds of dollars on the overall price of the ring. Alternatively, you can save a lot of money by buying a diamond with a slight tint to it. By having it placed in a tension mount, people will be far less likely to notice the slight tint in color. Tension mount diamond engagement rings tend to appear to grades clearer in terms of color than the diamond actually is because the setting allows more light to get into the diamond. Going down a couple of grades in color is also something that can potentially save you a few hundreds of dollars. Even better, if you buy a diamond that takes into account both of these money-saving suggestions, you can potentially save over a thousand dollars on your dream engagement ring.
Keep in mind, though, that there is one area that you absolutely cannot go cheap on-the labor. Making tension mount diamond engagement rings is a very specialized skill that not just any jeweler is qualified to do. If you hire someone who doesn’t know what he or she is doing, you are taking the risk that the diamond will not be mounted correctly and that the mounting will eventually come loose. And, if this happens, there is a very good chance that you will loose the diamond, since there is no way of knowing exactly when your ring is going to break. It’s definitely worth the cost of labor to hire a jeweler whose specialty is making tension mount diamond engagement rings.
