Garnet Madagascar
I bought a large “garnet” pendant on-line that was described as genuine. How can I tell if it is real?
It was stated that it was from Madagascar and it came in a sterling setting. I took it to a jeweler to have it set in gold. He said he thought it was real, but later said he had decided it was fake because of scratches on the surface, so now it is not in any setting (he cut it out of the silver mounting.) How can I tell for sure if this is a fake or real garnet? The color is right, but it is clear with few if any inclusions. It is about 25 x 15 mm.
Even as a professional geologist, I would take the stone to two other gemologists who are very well trained at identifying these things. Just pay them a few bucks and go with the best two out of three.
