Mined Violet Amethyst
My amethyst gem changes from violet to teal: Is this common?

I found a ring that belonged to a family member of mine. I decided to keep it and now wear it daily. I have noticed over the past few days that the stone periodically changes from a deep violet to a deep teal color. I’ve heard that amethyst has blue and red undertones, but that doesn’t explain why it turns teal.

I don’t have much knowledge on stones and gems. Can anyone enlighten me as to if this is common in amethyst?
It doesn’t change every 2 minutes. I know for a fact it’s not a mood ring. It only changes from violet to teal.

I think you will find that your stone changes colour in response to what type of lighting it is viewed under. I sounds as if it is not, in fact, an amethyst. A natural amethyst can show a minute degree of colour change but it is nothing distinctly noticeable as you describe. It sounds much more likely to be an early synthetic corundum made to simulate the strong colour change of alexandrite. Its colour is a very poor representation of alexandrite but it does look quite like amethyst in some lights. It was very popular at one time and a lot of jewellery made with it so it frequently turns up in in old jewellery boxes.
You could take it to a reputable jeweller to have a look, he may do it free but at worst only charge a few dollars for testing the stone and so give you a definite answer.
Hope this helps a little.
