Natural White Quartz
Why minerals contained in crystals appear in different colors than their natural state?
It fascinates me that the individual minerals can be in so many different colors, but I happen to have no idea what makes these. For example, hematite, consisting mainly of iron, of course a dark gray color similar to the natural color of the iron, but when hematite is found contained in a crystal such as quartz, it appears as deep red or even bright red. In addition, it may appear even a vibrant orange color, like Tangerine Quartz, in which hematite dust on the surface of the clear quartz due to the extreme Heat and pressure combined. I've also read that aquamarines have their blue-green color from traces of iron. Similarly, crystals of lithium-inclusions, such as lithium quartz and lepidolite, show a violet or lavender color, while lithium is indeed a silvery-white metal. Could someone explain to me how that works?
The color a molecule by light entering and exciting electrons into a higher and is then released as the electrons fall back into the ground state. In its elemental state the electrons in a given initial state. If the element is a molecule it is more accepted electrons, thus raising the level of the ground state. This changes the energy is released when the electrons in the fall to the ground state. The color of light depends on the energy of light. So, if the energy changes, changes the color.
