Can a 45 year old green parrot be trained to stop being aggressive?
We are babysitting a green parrot for the next 4 months which has been aggressive towards its owners and we have had no luck despite Chet Womacks advice and countless training books, in preventing aggressive lunges without provocation and the odd loss of finger parts! In the bird training world is there a foolproof way of training with guaranteed success? Help
Due to the parrot being especially long-lived, green and boldly aggressive, I am going to assume that you have an Amazon Parrot on your hands.
No, there is no fool-proof way of training a parrot that will guarantee success. If you happen to come across websites that assume this, ignore them. And don’t give them any money.
Parrots have not been domesticated like dogs and cats, and thus the parrot you are babysitting still retains many of the instincts and behaviors that he would use if he were still living in the jungles of South America. It is for this reason that parrots have a tendency to be creatures of habit that are generally resistant to change.
45 years is a very long time for a parrot to be set in a certain behavioral pattern. And aggression is one of the most complex behaviors to understand and work with. Amazons, especially, are prone to stubbornness- whenever I meet an old mean Amazon I have to chuckle because it makes me think of one of those old, grumpy men who are set in their ways.
I think that it is always possible to change a behavior, but it varies with each case. I can tell you for sure that 4 months will not be long enough in your case, unless perhaps you sacrifice your daily life to the parrot. And even then you may not succeed.
The best thing for you to do would be to understand and learn how to react to the aggressive behavior. Some things to think about: is the behavior triggered by certain things/people (often the cause of ‘displacement biting’)? does the parrot have a preference for males or females? is there anything in the parrot’s environment that might be scaring or agitating him? can you predict the parrot’s aggression? does the parrot exhibit ‘cage dominance’?
Here is the thing about Amazons: unlike a lot of parrot species, Amazons show very clear warning signs when they are ready to bite. Look out for pinning of the eyes, slight extension of the wings, nape feathers standing up, and strutting back and forth while slowly moving the head up and down (the ‘Amazon Dance’). If you encounter an Amazon in this mode, do not bother him until he calms down.
If he is handleable at all, try to discourage the aggressive behavior. A good way to do this is to use the ignoring technique. As soon as he shows any sign of aggression, immediately put him down, turn away and leave the room. And when he shows friendly behavior, reward him with a favorite treat or toy. Also, assume dominance and do not show fear (do not be intimidating or violent while doing this- just act confident and be consistent).
If he is not handleable at all and you need to handle him for whatever reason, use a long, thick stick. There are long, thick Amazon-sized perches that you can buy at the pet store for this purpose. And if you need to restrain him, use a pair of thick, durable gloves. I use welders gloves for this purpse. Just make sure to restrain him correctly. Parrots are very delicate, especially around the breast area. If you do not know how to properly restrain a parrot, a quick internet search should turn up several websites that have picture tutorials.
