Rough Tourmaline
how can i find a place to mine for gems?
my family owns 15 acres of mountain land in madison county north carolina. the area is rich with emeralds quarts sapphire garnet ruby topaz tourmaline gold etc. i just need some clues as to where i should look ,what minerals must be present and any other tips anyone may have! if anyone’s advice helps me find precious stones i will send several carats your way for free! i am very good at identifying the rough gems. a neighbor within a few miles found an 80lb raw ruby that is currently in our local gem museum, that got me started on the thought my family may be sitting on a gold mine… literally!lol! thanks for your time.
there are also several creeks on the property… would gold panning be an option?
You want to look for gems on a pegmatite veins. These are veins of igneous rock where the minerals in them form large crystals. Veins of pegmatite are common in the area around Madison County in NC, and there are gemstone mines not far away. Check with a local geologist to see what the bedrock in your property is.
If there is not any pegamtite veins on your property, you can visit nearby state parks (check with local authorities if mineral collecting is allowed) or go to mines open to the public. You want the mines where they allow you to dig in the ground for gems. The ones where they give you a bucket of rocks, you will be less likely to find something really nice (though you may find something small, many of those mines are salted with worthless stones)
