Universe Billion Years
So has the age of the universe changed another billion years lately?
I haven’t checked the age in about a week.
The errors on the age have decreased significantly in the past decade, from +- 2 billion years to +- 120 million years. The errors are not likely to increase, and with the European Planck mission results coming up, they’re likely to get even smaller.
The changes in the value of the age of the universe over the past 50 years or so are entirely consistent with the errors in the methods used and the errors reported. It’s stupid to attack the result when it is accompanied by carefully-assessed error analysis. This is what happens in the scientific measurement of a value—successive measurements give different results, but in each case the value given should be accompanied by an error analysis. The error analysis indicates a range of possible values for the result, and possibly even the distribution of probabilities of various values, given the uncertainties in the method. As techniques and measurements improve, the errors are reduced and the value measured will converge on the true value. The errors will never be zero, although they may become negligible. If the methodology is correct, the distribution of successive values will be statistically consistent with the errors reported: this is, in fact, the case with the measurement of the age of the Universe.
