How much did you spend on your diamond ring and how big is it?
I am looking to upgrade my diamond engagement ring, its been 5 years. We are upper-middle class to middle class. I have read online on many sites that what is recommended is 1-3 months salary but there is no hard and fast rule. I do not want anything ostentatious and feel even 1 months salary is ludicrous. I also don’t want to risk it being stolen or looking fake. Do people think that 1 ct. emerald cut is too much/4500.00 dollars, its colorless, vvs ect. this is about 1.5 weeks salary for my husband. I am not a flashy person, prefer comfort but I am pretty large 5′10, size 12 shoe. My previous ring was only 635 dollars and was .34 ct pear shape. So what do people think?

I took my wife to a local jeweler, he’s been around for 35+ years. His diamonds were AMAZING! I think that if you are serious about this you need to do the same! I am not recommending a chain store however. If you live in Lawrence Kansas go see Goldmakers on Massachusetts street. They are the BEST! Ask to see the rocks under magnification and/or a loop. If you decide to buy one, use that jeweler to set the new diamond and then have it appraised by him/her. Take that appraisal (and the ring with receipt) to your insurance agent and have it insured aginst loss or damage!
