Are Yellow Diamonds Valuable?
Although rarer than white diamonds, the natural yellow diamond is relatively common among fancy colored diamonds. There is a frequent false belief that natural yellow diamonds are less valuable than colorless diamonds. Although very light or slightly yellow diamonds are thought to be fairly typical and not of great value, yellow diamonds such as intense and vivid are quite valuable.
Yellow diamonds with secondary brown hues are worth considerably less than pure yellow stones. However, secondary colors of green-yellow or orange-yellow can considerably raise the value of the stone because these colors are even rarer than fancy yellow diamonds.
Natural fancy yellow diamonds are graded by their strength and intensity of color. The highest-quality grade is the Vivid Yellow, closely followed by the Intense Yellow diamond. The lowest quality of natural yellow diamond is the Light Yellow diamond, followed by the Fancy Yellow. Several shades of Vivid Yellow diamonds and also the rarer Intense Yellow diamonds are called Canary Diamonds. Canary diamonds are the most rare among yellow diamonds and consequently they are the most costly and are desirable by both collectors and classy buyers. The canary diamond has a very special shade of yellow, and even if you have never seen a Canary Yellow before, once you see it, you’ll “recognize” it immediately!
Yellow diamonds look fantastic when they are mixed with white stones and typically yellow diamonds are set in yellow gold. A 3-stone ring should include white diamonds and the yellow diamond should be placed in the middle. White stones in trapeze, oval or triangle shapes will make a beautiful setting.
Similar to other natural fancy color diamonds the color remains the main thing that has a bearing on how much the diamond is worth, then comes size and of course clarity. Clarity is also important in evaluation of yellow diamonds, though this is much less than in white diamonds.
Natural fancy colored diamonds are most frequently found in a Radiant cut. This is considered the ideal shape for increasing the color. Yellow diamonds can be also in the Cushion cut, Oval cut, and Pear and Heart shapes. The rarest are the Emerald, Square Emerald and the Brilliant cuts (round shape). Prices for these shapes are substantially higher and not only when it comes to the yellow diamonds. This refers to all fancy color diamonds..
Colored diamonds have completely different standards to white diamonds in regards to cut quality. The goal when cutting a fancy color diamond should be to intensify the depth and saturation of the diamond’s color while striking a balance between the carat weight and brilliance. When buying a natural yellow diamond or any other natural fancy color diamond, it is extremely important to verify that the diamond is accompanied by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) grading report, or other trustworthy laboratories like HRD, IGI, EGL, stating that the color is natural. The report should also describe the intensity of color, and also how the color is distributed throughout the stone.
The Kimberley Octahedron is the biggest naturally formed actohedral diamond in the world. The owner of the mine prefers not to cut this diamond and wishes to leave it in its original condition. Due to this the color and distribution grades cannot be applied to this magnificent diamond.
