Yellowish Green Sapphire
Unusual eye color questions/ ring around iris?
I have light green (true green) eyes with a very faint almost imperceptible yellowish cast around the pupil. The weird part is I have a thick black ring surrounding the iris. How common is this? Any ideas about heritage that would be indicated by this?
My husband has brown eyes but our son has gorgeous solid blue-gray eyes. They are not blue, they are not gray; they are truly a blend. They are almost sapphire color- lighter than that but darker than the standard. I would say they are “steel blue” in a dark sense. Anyway, he also has the dark ring.

Would need to see your eye up close to be exact. However, for green eyes the mixture of yellow and blue hues bring about the ‘green’. There isn’t any absolute ‘green’ or ‘hazel’ etc. There are many mixtures — these various mixtures are documented online in many places for a true understanding of the many eye colors.
The black ring around the iris is common. I have this as well, it is often a contrast the is pronounced due to the cornea and iris bending light adjacent to the edges of the iris. It is the end of the pigment spectrum in the eye, and is a nice contrasting effect.
As for heritage, you really can’t base anything concrete on having green, blue, hazel, or even brown eyes. Often people will say blue eyes indicate northern European descent and it very well may, however they exist in ireland, germany, and even in the carribean among other parts of the world.
Brown is the dominant eye color (this is those with brown inner and outer irises (no hint of yellow , green or blue which would turn this into a ‘hazel’ eye of some variation). Due to a mutation many many years ago the blue pigment was introduced and gave way to the variety of gene expressions we now see.
An often mistaken eye color is hazel — many with the eye color have denoted their color as ‘brown’ — not taking the time to really note that a great deal of their iris is actually green, yellow, blue, or some variation. While not particularly practically important it is a very different eye color than brown.
I love all the eye colors, no one is better or prettier than another .. I like the diversity — but when you have an eye color that has multiple pigments, like your own.. green,.. a hazel, an amber, and so on you get this effect of changing ‘eye’ color.
When in fact eye color rarely changes.. though it can in some individuals over time.. but by and large it does not. These changes in color from day to day are due to the ambient light, and clothing (and if applicable, makeup worn) by the individual. Depending on these factors a hazel eye can look stone grey (imagine that).. or light brown.. to a shade of green. Green eyes usually ‘morph’ even more — to a blueish appearance, a grey appearance, they can mimic hazel mix, and of course be stark green.
Your son depicts what genetic recessive genes you and your husband have — of which a geneticist could happily examine 
— Your son receive two recessive genes for the eye color.
You, with your green eyes,.. received one recessive and one dominant likely (much like hazel is presented/generated) — Your husband, if has true brown eyes from pupil to edge of iris.. has the dominant gene expressed.
